Memolli: coffee journal app to track and remember every brew

I love trying new coffees, but whether you order new single-origin coffees from places like Trade Coffee or you try out new coffee shops in your area, keeping track of what you liked can be challenging. I’ve tried various approaches: scattered photos of coffee bags in my phone, quick notes in Apple Notes, or an Excel spreadsheet. These approaches worked for a while… but I eventually give up and just rely on my memory.

However, I still had this desire to catalog and take notes on all the coffees I’ve tried. So I built Memolli: a private, visual-first note-taking app for remembering every coffee I tried without the noise of social feeds or the hassle of blank-note apps. Sounds useful? Read on to learn how Memolli can help you remember every coffee you try.

See every coffee shop you tried on a map

Here’s a screenshot of my personal map in Memolli. Every pin is a coffee shop or roaster where I tried a coffee. The selected one shows my reviews for Devocion, a local roaster in Manhattan.

One of Memolli’s best features is seeing every coffee shop you tried on the map. It’s like your personal version of Google Maps. I’ve used this feature to track the many different coffee shops I’ve visited in Manhattan. One example is this chain called Devocion that roasts their own coffee. I’ve bought a few bags from them and use Memolli to remember which ones I liked.

Customizable and visual-first design

I am a very visual person, so an image brings back memories much better than text. Since Memolli is about capturing your personal memories, I wanted it to put all photos front and center. For me, the end result is a very colorful gallery of photos of coffee bags, since many coffee roasters tend to be very creative in their designs. Every month I order new coffee from roasters like Colectivo Coffee, Trade Coffee, or Gimme Coffee. I’ll take a photo of the bag and write a few notes about the flavor, aroma, and whether I liked it or not. It can be as simple as that, or you can add custom fields to track what you care about: origin, roast level, aroma, flavor notes, acidity, body, brewing method, or anything else. It’s designed to let you quickly create your review, but flexible enough to let you go deep if you want to. Here are the different fields you can fill out for each review:

Review inputDescriptionOptional?
NameThe name of the coffee, like “Ethiopia Yirgacheffe” or the full roaster label
RatingRate on a scale of 1–5 stars
NotesYour unstructured thoughts
PhotosSnap pics of the bag, pour, or setup to jog your memory later
LocationPin the roaster brand or café where you tried it
ListAdd to custom lists like “Favorite Light Roasts”, “Must Re-order”, or “Too Bitter”
Custom FieldsCreate your own: Origin, Process, Roast Date, Brew Ratio, etc.

Works offline, travels with you

Memolli works fully offline, which is especially helpful if you trying out a new coffee shop and your cell signal is spotty. Photos and notes sync automatically when you’re back online. I’ve had to use this when traveling to upstate New York for some hiking. I always like trying out new coffee shops, but those small towns nesteled in the Catskills often have poor cell service. One example is this café called Mornings. They have decent coffee, but I mainly go there for their pastries. Cell signal there is terrible, but with Memolli I can log my review either right there in the café or even at the trail head.

A sweet spot between note-taking apps and public review sites

Memolli is more focused than generic note-taking apps like Apple Notes, but fully private and judgment-free unlike social platforms like Yelp or Google Maps.

  • Vs. Google Maps or review sites: Great for finding roasters or reading strangers’ opinions, but not built for your personal tracking. Memolli’s map (and lists) are yours alone, filled with your photos and notes. No ads or external noise. Read more on this comparison in my other blog post.
  • Vs. generic note-taking apps: Flexible, but setting up coffee-specific templates takes time and most lack offline access, map integration, and easy visual scanning. Memolli comes with ready-made coffee templates so you’re logging in seconds. Read more on this comparison in my other blog post.
